The incident happened in Inwood, near the intersection of Sheridan Avenue and Nassau Avenue, shortly after 11 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28.
Nassau County Police said 44-year-old Patrick Mwesigwa was struck by a Ford Explorer heading southbound on Sheridan Avenue. He suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
A 35-year-old man who was driving the Explorer remained at the scene and met with police.
Mwesigwa’s death sparked a flood of donations on GoFundMe, where he was remembered as a “talented chef” and father who immigrated to the United States from Uganda to follow his culinary dreams.
“Having journeyed from humble beginnings in Kyambogo, Banda, and Fort Portal, Uganda to establishing himself in New York City's bustling culinary scene, Patrick overcame countless challenges with an infectious smile and an unmatched dedication to his work and his friends,” said campaign creator Wilson Kabeera.
He went on to remember Mwesigwa as a “beacon of warmth and joy,” whose life was cut short while crossing the street after one of his daily gym sessions.
“Patrick was much more than a skilled chef. His kindness, resilience, and unwavering spirit touched all who knew him.”
Kabeera is trying to raise enough money to have Mwesigwa’s body brought back to Uganda, “so he may rest in peace in his homeland, surrounded by those who loved him most.”
“Your donation, no matter the size, will help us give Patrick the dignified farewell he deserves and provide comfort and closure to his family.”
